Don't You Love it When it Works?
For some reason unknown to me (well, actually, I believe it was the Holy Spirit's leading, but that kind of kills my intro line), I decided to preach a series on the early church.
One of the biggest differences I saw between the early church and ours was that there was much more fellowship back then. Our church is very, very friendly, but we're lucky if we get a chance to talk to each other on Sunday. For some, there is fellowship through the week, but there's nothing that we have done as a church to foster that. The result is that there are a lot of people who don't get included.
So Sunday I mentioned in my sermon about how the early church did it.

And someone took that idea and ran with it. Only, in our case, it looked a little more like this:
We went out for Mexican (at a restaurant where some of my soccer friends work) for their Thursday evening mariachi band (which was excellent). There were a lot of people there, and often people who knew members of our party would stop by and ask what we were celebrating, and the answer was always something like: nothing special; we just got a group together from church to fellowship.
I think it would be great if we kept doing it, but when they ask what we're celebrating, we can say, "We're celebrating the Living Christ!"

Excellent! I wasn't able to comment before, but I really appreciated your post on the Acts 2 church. You're right on.
Would that we have the guts to say something so bold as "Celebrating the Living Christ" when people ask. It's such a different statement than "Nothing special."

Good luck with the sermons on Acts, that's what we are doing at my church and we now in Acts 12. There is so much that we can learn from this book.
