Things You Never Forget

I was a senior in high school and the nearby church hosted a Friday night activity night with games, fun, a devotion, music, sports, you name it. A lot of fun to hang out with other kids. One Friday, my sister and I were getting ready to go, and her boyfriend du jour was also coming along. no worries. Also no worries when she told me they wanted to leave early -- she was totally cool about it, asking if it was ok. No problem; I can get a ride home. It's not too far (2 1/2 miles).

It was all good until it was almost time to go and I started asking for a ride. It was then that I overheard my "friend" Sam going around setting up a "prank" on me.

"If Brian asks for a ride, say no!"

I didn't ask anyone else for a ride. I walked those two and a half miles home in pitch dark, sweaty from playing basketball and really cold.

Sam had been my friend since elementary school, but that was the day that friendship died.
