No Christmas Bonus

Remember that time in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when Clark Griswold went nuts about not getting his Christmas bonus? That part of that movie always bothered me a bit. It's a bonus, for crying out loud! Not something you earned or necessarily deserve, but a bonus! This entitlement mentality that spends a bonus before it's received drives me nuts.

Which brings me to the point of this post. We're not getting a Christmas bonus this year. Used to be, SP would announce to PPRC that it was time to put an announcement in the bulletin (for a month) asking for a "love gift" for the pastors. I always felt really weird about that. I mean, is it really a love gift if they have to be asked for it? And were they really giving in love, or did they feel compelled to give? It felt weird to be asking for it, of all things.

So this year, that announcement has not gone in the bulletin. So my assumption is we're not getting a Christmas bonus (err, love gift). I, for one, am happy. Give it to someone who needs it. That's what we're doing.

Bonus's in the church are pretty weird, eh? When I was an intern I loved what the church did. They did a Christmas offering in October and then dispersed the funds in reverse order. The SP got $50 and the newest janitor ended up with like $1200. Maybe it's worth a try at your church?

My church doesn't do them... but most of the people in the church get them from work. Reminds me of Christmas vacation every time.
